Biography

Sport has dominated David Lord's life. As a four-year-old he bowled at one stump for hours on end, threw a golf ball against a craggy rockery to practice his catching, and hit hundreds of tennis balls against the garage wall. It was never-ending and schoolwork definitely took a back seat.

In principle, nothing has changed six decades later. He still plays competitive tennis. He notched up 17 years as a first grade cricket all-rounder with Mosman, with seven of them as captain. Another 10 years were spent as a first grade baseballer and a single figure golfer. And as a schoolboy at The Kings School he took part in hurdling, high jumping and won a British Empire rifle shooting medal.

Now, after nearly four decades in the media, he spends his waking hours keeping abreast of what's happening in the world of sport around the world for his sporting segments on ABC NewsRadio every weekend. David has been deeply involved in two of the biggest sporting stories since World War Two, World Series Cricket in 1977 and professional rugby in 1983. In those early days of WSC, David was managing Jeff Thomson and Vivian Richards.

Withdrawing "Thommo" the original WSC ended up in the High Court of England, described by David as "not a top tourist resort". In 1983 he single-handedly signed 208 of the best rugby players Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and France to play an international pro circuit. The concept didn't get off the ground, but it did force the IRB to get cracking and bring in the World Rugby Cup, now one of the world's great sporting spectacles.
