Biography

A former triathlete, Katie Mactier has had a major impact on female track and road cycling since taking up the sport in 1998.

Despite breaking her collarbone in her first race, Mactier was the only female to finish to the grueling Melbourne to Warrnambool in 1999, before ing the Jayco-VIS Development team.

Mactier became Australia Open Road Champion in 2001 and represented her country at the UCI World Championships in Portugal.

Joining the Italian Michela Fanini team for 2002, Mactier won a stage of the Giro d'Italia before ing US team Saturn.

She then turned her attention to track cycling and the 3000 metre Individual Pursuit. With just eight training sessions to her credit, Mactier won the Australian title and won silver behind legendary Dutchwoman Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel at the World Championships in Stuttgart.

With the World Championships in her home town in 2004, Mactier again rode brilliantly, shaded only by New Zealand's Sarah Ulmer for the world title.

Despite beating the previous World Record in Athens, Mactier claimed silver behind Ulmer in the Pursuit at the Olympics.

An ever-improving cyclist, Mactier is an accomplished speaker, drawing on her athletic and academic achievements for audiences. Her sponsors include Fitzroy Cycles, Oakley and Becton.
