Biography

Olympian & Five Time Australian Champion 100m
After five consecutive years of sole dominance of the 100m Australian Title, Matt Shirvington placed second to Patrick Johnson at the 2003 Australian Championships. However, he responded by clocking 10.09 seconds, the fastest ever legal time by an Australian on home soil, at the last of the Telstra A-series meets for the 2003 domestic season. This season Matt has been hampered by ongoing ill health, suffering symptoms related to glandular fever diagnosed last year. However Matt has vowed to be back as a competitive athlete next year for Australia.

Since his first international meet in 1997, Matt has had a phenomenal rise in international sprinting and has competed against the world's best, including Ato Bolden, Frankie Fredericks, Dennis Mitchell and Michael Johnson.

At 19 years, Matt smashed the 100m Australian record with a sensational run at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. He ran a close fourth (behind Ato Bolden and Frankie Fredericks) in 10.03 seconds and was thrown into the media spotlight with headlines as Australia's best hope for 30 years.

In 1998 Matt also won the 100m at the Australian Championships and the Australian Grand Prix Series. In 1999, Matt broke the 60m Australian Indoor record at the World Indoor Championships. He also won the 100m and 200m at the Australian Championships.

At 21 years old at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Matt's performance ranked him in the world's top ten 100m sprinters. He won the 100m at the Nationals again and in 2001 at the Goodwill Games Matt secured his first international medal.
