Biography

Olympic Gold Medallist

Scott McGrory and Brett Aitken's win in the Madison cycling event was one of the emotional highlights of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The story behind Scott's success is one of overcoming extreme adversity to realise a dream.

Scott was ed in his first Australian national team in 1984 at 14 years of age and won his first national open title at 15 years. He went strength to strength winning 21 major stage or race wins between 1989 and 2001.

His Olympic journey was courageous, both emotionally and physically. In order to secure a place in the Olympic Madison event, a top 14 place was required at the 1999 World Championships in Berlin. In one of the most heroic rides ever, Scott had to complete the final 60 laps of the race alone, without the assistance of his partner Brett Aitken who was knocked unconscious in a fall when they were placed well for a win. Scott raced on alone and hung on desperately, slipping first place to finish 13th to qualify and keep their Olympic dream alive.

At the beginning of 2000, Brett and his wife's daughter was diagnosed with a neurolical disorder. Then, two months prior to the Olympics, Scott and his fiancé tragically lost their three month old son to a heart condition. Through sheer willpower and determination they managed to focus on what was required to maintain their form and made history by pushing through their hardships and claiming gold at the Sydney Games.
