Tim Matthews

Since winning five gold medals at his athletic debut at the 1995 National Championships, Tim Mathews has since established himself as one of the fastest arm amputee runners in the world. Tim has won five Paralympic medals including two gold, two bronze and two world records at the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games and one gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics. Tim was unlucky at the Athens Paralympics after tearing his hamstring in the heat of the 100 metres.

Leading up to the 2000 Sydney Paralympics Tim won two gold at the 1997 Paralympic Revival and one gold at the 1998 World Championships in Birmingham, breaking the 4x100m world record and collecting bronze in the 100m. In 2001 he claimed a gold and silver at the Goodwill Games and one silver and one bronze at the 2002 World Championships.

Tim now works for the Australian Paralympic Committee in the area of Athlete Development, Managing a Talent Search Program aimed at identifying the next young batch of Paralympic stars.

Away the track, Tim is an accomplished speaker and presenter. He has spoken at many types of functions over the past ten years school groups to AFL Presidents dinners, through to business leaders and state conferences. Tim reflects on growing up with a disability and what it takes to achieve at the highest level and he shares stories of amazing athletes and the performances he has witnessed in more than 20 countries over the last twelve years of competition.
