Biography

Patrick Dwyer is one of Australia's most promising young athletes. The 23 year old runner Wagga in New South Wales made enormous inroads into the national rankings in 1997 when he took his personal 400m best 49 seconds to 45.80 seconds in the space of a year. Patrick ran as part of the relay squad which made the final at the World University Games. He was struck down with injury during 1998 but nevertheless did an amazing job to finish second in the National 400m final after very limited preparation. After just missing out on qualifying for the 400m final at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Patrick has recently recorded his best performance yet - reaching the semi-finals at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, amongst a star studded field which included Olympic legend Michael Johnson.

Patrick was undefeated during the 2000 Optus Grand Prix meets for the 400m event. But it was at the Engen Grand Prix in Pretoria, South Africa that Patrick achieved his best time ever of 44.73 seconds to win the 400m final and give him a realistic chance of breaking Darren Clark's Australian record.
