James Dunn is a freelance finance journalist and media consultant. He writes for The Australian, the Sunday Mail and IFA magazine, as well as the global credit magazine Creditflux, and is a regular finance commentator on Australian radio and television.
Previous experience
James was founding editor of Shares magazine, and oversaw one of the most successful magazine launches in Australia. He has also written for BRW, Personal Investor, The Age and Management Today, and was subsequently personal investment editor at The Australian and editor of financial website, investorweb.com.au.

His first book, Share Investing for Dummies, was published in September 2002; with an updated version appearing in 2006. James was researcher for Robert Gottliebsen’s book The Ten Best & Ten Worst Business Decisions of Australian CEOs, published in March 2003.
Radio:
James gives a daily finance report on Radio 3AW in Melbourne and is Australian business correspondent for the nationally syndicated Larry Williams program on Newstalk ZB in New Zealand. He was co-presenter of the popular nationally syndicated finance talkback program, Dollars at Work. On television, he has appeared on The Panel, Four Corners and Today Tonight and is a regular commentator on SBS News and Sky News.
James also has several consultancies in financial media and investment, in the course of which he makes approximately 50 presentations a year throughout Australia, to audiences of up to 500 people.
Born and raised in Ararat, western Victoria, James graduated from the University of Melbourne as Bachelor of Letters and Bachelor of Arts. He is a fellow of the Williamson Community Leadership Program, operated by Leadership Victoria. James is on the editorial committee of Leadership Victoria’s biannual magazine, Leadership.
In 1984, James won two BMWs on Sale of the Century. Selling the cars financed a year of overseas travel and also a share portfolio – which did not survive the 1987 crash, the event that inspired James to become a finance journalist.
James is married to Jane and they have two children, Eliza and Harry.

You accomplished a well-judged balance between nostalgia and the harsher realities ... all with a good sprinkling of humour.
James captivated an audience of non-financial people with a passionate, eloquent and at times, humorous account of the current political and economic climate in Australia and around the world. He was truly engaging and had the audience on the edge of their seats. It was refreshing to hear how he cut through to the issues without the spin and was prepared to provide his opinions. Many participants commented that they have never heard anyone be so passionate about statistics and economics and yet be able to talk about these issues in an easy to understand manner. He did a great job.
