Even as a child Jason Bargwanna knew he would be a racing car driver and from the day he was born cars and racing have been his passion – it was that passion that made him finally realise his dream.
Jason retired from full-time driving in 2012, and now, along with his wife Deb, owns and runs four Red Rooster stores.
He also holds the position of Driver Standards Officer for V8Supercars – he may not be behind the wheel but he is now the Top Cop and sits in Race Control keeping the next generation in line.
Jason’s first major success in motor racing came in 1992 when, sharing a Toyota Corolla with his cousin Scott, he won Class C at Bathurst. In 1996 he came runner-up in the Formula Ford Championship and then runner-up in the Formula Holden Championship in 1997. In the same year he moved into V8 Supercars with the Holden Young Lions but became a full time V8 Supercar driver in 1998 with the Valvoline Cummins team. He finished third in only his second championship round, had his first V8 race win at Calder and placed a sensational 3rd at Bathurst with Jimmy Richards.
In 1999 Jason scored his first Championship round win at Winton. The following year he went on to win another round at Winton as well as the 2000 Bathurst title and a round win at the Indy.
There are numerous other podium placings throughout Jason’s first 5 years in the premier category.
In the 2003/2004 season Jason made the switch over to Ford and drove for the newly expanded Mark Larkham/Orrcon Racing team.
Over the next 9 years Jason drove for WPS Racing, Sprint Gas Racing, BMW Australia in the MINI Challenge, Kelly Racing and Brad Jones Racing – scoring multiple wins, podiums and lap records during this time.
He combined his V8Supercar racing with competing in New Zealand’s elite touring car category, the NZ Touring Car Championship, and during this last 6 year stint he became one of NZ’s most winning touring car drivers scoring 2 Championship wins, 2 x 2nd and 2 x 4th places in the Championship. He is 3 time winner of the JASON RICHARDS TROPHY and 2 time Ashley Stichbury Award winner (NZ’s motor racing version of the Brownlow) as well as multiple lap records at all circuits during the 2014/15 season.
